bismallah - to bless something that is being begun. this is the only pee froiss participation on this mixtape. The bonus track is with Xuman from Pee Froiss. He is even taller than me! He's super nice. Super professional. When we walked down the street together in his neighborhood, everybody knew him and said hello. He is also a DJ - radio and live and a producer.

this is a sound design track. uses some audio record in miami, i think, I mutilated the name of the destination to make it more "mysterious." ;-) got some nice backwards recordings of planes dropping bombs on it.

5 Maga Bo NAKHIL feat. K-Libre [Dubplate]
This is with Mounir and Simo of K-Libre who I hooked up with in Meknes for 5 days to work on tracks. They were some of the mmost open, interested and enthusiastic MCs that I met in morocco.

Black Alien is a friend here in Rio. He was originally in Planet Hemp, the super notorious rock punk hardcore hip hop band that was super outspoken in their support of ganja. They got incredibly popular and then sortof imploded. I tried to record with Gustavo (Black Alien) one time, but he'd been up all night doing coke and all he could do was sing little bob marley licks and drink cachaca. But, when he's on, he's really on. This track is about the realities of the favelas - why people go up there - to do drugs, to traffic, to do corrupt shit and it happens because the people there having nothing to lose.....and this is Rio de Janeiro.

8 Maga Bo TOMADA feat. BNegão [Dubplate]
BNegão˜is my favorite Brazilian rapper. He was also in Planet Hemp, but has now gone on to a fairly successful solo career as well as working in seveal different projects (one is with Instituto from track 11). He is very philosophical and spiritual in his lyrics. Some heavy jungle ragga here.
9 Maga Bo É PRA VALER feat. Piveti [Dubplate]
This track is based on repente, a rhythm from the NE of brazil that is normally just with pandeiro (brazilian tamborine) and rapping - normally imporvised. Piveti was from a big hip hop group from São Paulo in the 90's. He was already famous for that and then he got busted and put into jail for alegedly stealing a car. After 2 1/2 years, he escaped. actually, he was let out for a visitation day to see his family. Instead, he went to a recording studio and then just didn't go back. He said he couldn't deal any more. So, he was a fugitive for 1 1/2 years. Eventually, he was able to find a lawyer that found some holes in his case and got him off. Now he is free and cool. He is one of the most streetwsie (malandro as they say in Carioca/brazlilian slang) characters I know. He also works really hard and can rap his ass off. this track has Mr. Jam who is formerly of DJ Dolores' band.

this track came about as a result of a recording we (grey and I) made in the middle of playing in the Suvaco do Cristo bloco in Rio in carnaval. There was a fight and a gun shot and people running and people throwing huge drums (surdos) and mass confusion and then the guy got on the mobile sound system mic and asked people to calm down and to respect the bateria because without the bateria, there is no carnaval! That samples then grew into this track. It's anot samba though, it's maracatu.

Kalaf is Angolan and has lived in Portugal long enough to be considered portuguese (or so he says). This track is about missed connections - arriving too early or too late. Trying to connect with that someone special. Trying to relate on an honest and real level. The track itself is made up of sound fx sampled from sci fi movies. lots of movement sounds - vehicles cruising around accelerating, stopping etc.

André is a producer/.musician/artist/actor and probably lots of other things. he lives and works in sao paulo. One of the few brazilian producers who is looking to sample indian music and oher musics which are deemed "exotic" from a brazilian perspective. he mixes up a LOT of different stuff and makes it seem totally normal. this groove is distinctly brazilian, yet its got some public enemy in there, and some bollywood and of course, Xis, rapping on top of it saying that we are samples of god.
